Several years ago I wrote a book and put it online to sell as an ebook. The book was priced at $29.95. I would sell a few a day when I started and on a good day I'd sell 6 or 7. Then a few months after releasing the book, I decided to test the sale price because sometimes you can make a lot more profit by simply adjusting your price.
One morning I changed the price to $39.95 and then left the house to go hang out with a couple of friends of mine. I spent the day with them and then I asked one of them to use his computer to check my sales stats. I couldn't believe what I saw!
I had sold 10 copies of my book which was the most I'd ever sold in a single day at that point. And the amazing part was that it was at a higher price than I usually charge.
Imagine what would happen if you raised your prices by 33% and your sales went up. For me it nearly doubled my sales with just that one breakthrough.
After selling ebooks for awhile, I decided to create another product. This was an interview series with me interviewing a different relationship guru each month for my dating advice business and offering it as a monthly subscription. The interviews were great and I knew that my customers need the information, but hardly anyone would subscribe and actually buy the subscription.
I kept trying to for several months to figure out why no one was buying and I almost threw in the towel because nothing I did worked…
Then I got an idea. What if I offered someone who bought my ebook 2 of the interviews for free if they would try a subscription to my interview series. In other words, I gave them 2 things for free if they bought 1 thing from me. That was the breakthrough. And all of a sudden half of my customers who were buying my ebook were becoming subscribers… and over time I had thousands of monthly subscribers for the program...
This simple breakthrough of giving away 2 things led me to DOUBLING my business again...
Here's one more example from that business.
After selling e-books and subscriptions for awhile, I realized that I was making a lot more profit from the monthly interview series than I was from selling the book in the first place.
It occurred to me that maybe I should test lowering the price of my book again. So I lowered it from $39.95 down to $19.95 because if I sold more copies of my ebook and more people signed up for my interview series, I'd make a lot more profit in the long run. And guess what?
Another massive breakthrough that real grew my sales again!
